Driveways that are installed using tarmac is applied the same way as most of the roads in Britain. Tarmac Driveways which is also known as an Asphalt Driveway is a popular choice throughout North East thanks mainly to their affordable prices, long life span and minimal maintenance.
Free survey · Fixed written quote · 10-year workmanship guarantee
Tarmac remains the best value hard-wearing driveway surface you can buy — fast to lay, tough enough for multiple vehicles, and smart when properly edged. The difference between a tarmac drive that lasts 20 years and one that breaks up in three is entirely in the ground preparation, which is why our quotes always spell out the excavation depth and sub-base specification.

Driveways tarmac is a choice that has remained popular despite the many innovations in driveways over recent decades and is one of the most cost effective and stable surfaces around.
Whilst the basic principles of installing tarmac driveways remain the formulation of the materials have been gradually improved over the years to improve quality and longevity. It is important that the correct depth of tarmac is laid for your project which is why you should choose a reputable tarmac drive contractor and not some fly by night contractor that has called by to convince you that they can install a new tarmac drive at a bargain price.

We install resin, block paving and tarmac driveways right across Teesside and County Durham. Find your local driveway page:
We measure up, assess levels and drainage (important for planning rules on front gardens), and give you a fixed written quote with the full specification.
The area is dug out to the correct depth and a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base is laid — the single biggest factor in how long your drive lasts.
Two courses of hot-rolled tarmac are machine-laid and compacted: a binder course for strength, then a fine surface course for the clean finish.
Block, kerb or granite edging locks the tarmac in and frames the drive. We leave the site spotless and the drive ready to use within days.
Since 2008, paving over a front garden with an impermeable surface larger than five square metres requires either planning permission or — far simpler — compliant drainage so rainwater doesn’t run onto the highway. We design that in as standard: falls to a lawn or border, a linear drainage channel, or a soakaway where needed, so your new drive is fully compliant without a planning application. It’s one of several details that separate a proper job from a cheap one — along with full-depth excavation, a compacted sub-base and two-course machine laying. Comparing surfaces? See our guide to resin vs block paving vs tarmac.
Every installation is covered by our 10-year workmanship guarantee and full public liability insurance — and you don’t pay a penny until you’re completely satisfied with the finished job. We’re a family-run Darlington business (winner of Best Driveway Service Darlington 2025, rated 5.0★ by local homeowners), so our reputation rides on every job we finish.
As well as central Darlington we regularly work in Hurworth, Middleton St George, Sadberge, Cockerton, Blackwell, Hummersknott, Mowden, Haughton, Harrowgate Hill, Croft-on-Tees, Heighington and Great Burdon — plus Newton Aycliffe, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Durham and the wider North East. Wherever you are locally, the survey is free and there’s no obligation.
Most double driveways come in between £2,500 and £4,000 depending on size, excavation and edging. We give a fixed written quote after a free survey — the price you’re quoted is the price you pay.
Properly built — full excavation, compacted sub-base, two courses — 15 to 25 years. The cheap jobs that fail early are almost always laid thin over an old surface.
Most drives are excavated and surfaced within 2–3 days, and you can drive on it after around 3–5 days depending on weather.
Not if drainage is handled correctly. Tarmac is impermeable, so we build in compliant drainage (falls to a border, a channel drain or soakaway) which keeps you inside permitted development rules.
Occasionally an overlay is viable, but usually we advise against it — trapped movement in the old surface comes straight through. We’ll tell you honestly at the survey.
Both, plus we can frame either in contrasting block edging. Red costs a little more per square metre — the quote shows both options.
A standard residential build handles cars and vans comfortably. If you park anything heavier — a motorhome, a work truck — tell us at the survey and we’ll upgrade the sub-base and depth to suit.
Yes — every driveway carries our 10-year workmanship guarantee, and we don’t take payment until the job is finished and you’re happy.
