The area is dug out to the correct depth and a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base is laid — the single biggest factor in how long your drive lasts.
3. Binder and surface courses
Two courses of hot-rolled tarmac are machine-laid and compacted: a binder course for strength, then a fine surface course for the clean finish.
4. Edging and finishing
Block, kerb or granite edging locks the tarmac in and frames the drive. We leave the site spotless and the drive ready to use within days.
Planning rules, drainage and doing tarmac properly
Since 2008, paving over a front garden with an impermeable surface larger than five square metres requires either planning permission or — far simpler — compliant drainage so rainwater doesn’t run onto the highway. We design that in as standard: falls to a lawn or border, a linear drainage channel, or a soakaway where needed, so your new drive is fully compliant without a planning application. Red tarmac or black?

Will heavy vehicles damage it?
