The most common call we get about driveways isn’t for a new one — it’s “part of my drive has sunk”. Around Darlington and Teesside that’s usually the clay ground settling under a sub-base that was too shallow in the first place, water getting underneath through failed joints or poor drainage, or years of a car parked in exactly the same spot.
The good news: block paving is genuinely repairable. Because it’s made of individual blocks, we can lift the affected area, rebuild and re-compact the base underneath, and relay the same blocks — colour-matched and blended into the rest of the drive. Done properly, a lift-and-relay repair costs a fraction of a replacement and adds years of life.
Tarmac and resin surfaces can be repaired too — potholes and cracks in tarmac can be cut out and hot-patched, and localised resin damage can be re-bound — though large-scale failure across a whole surface usually points to a base problem, where we’ll give you a straight comparison between repair and replacement costs so you can decide with the numbers in front of you.
How each surface fails — and the right repair for each
Driveway repairs go wrong when the fix doesn’t match the failure. Each surface has its own way of dying, and its own correct repair.
Tarmac: potholes and crumbling edges
Potholes happen where water got in and frost did the rest; edges crumble where there was never a proper restraint. The right repair is cut back square to sound material and hot-fill compacted flush — cold-lay poured into a ragged hole pops back out by spring. Crumbling edges need an edge restraint added, or the repair simply migrates inward year on year.
Block paving: sinking, weeds and fade
Sunken runs mean the sub-base beneath has settled — the honest fix lifts the blocks, re-compacts and re-screeds the base, then relays the same blocks. Weeds grow in the joints from above, not below: re-sanding with kiln-dried sand and sealing shuts them out. Faded colour isn’t damage — a professional clean and seal restores it dramatically for £8–£12/m².
Resin and concrete: the honest limits
Resin-bound surfaces occasionally shed stone at high-wear spots or chalk under UV if the original resin was cheap — localised re-application works when the base is sound. Cracked concrete is the one we’re most honest about: crack fillers are cosmetic, and a slab that’s moved keeps moving. We’ll tell you when a repair is real and when it’s replacement money better spent once.

What Our Customers Say
EXCELLENT Based on 70 reviews Posted on Google Daniel HTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Tom and his team have left us with a first class upgraded drive. Tom was brilliant, friendly and knowledgeable to deal with from our initial no obligation quote months ago to us getting back in touch later in the year, we didn’t feel rushed whatsoever. He gave us a more than fair price for the job, the outcome of two days hard graft by him, and his team is an outstanding end product we are more than satisfied with. He should be satisfied with the high standards the team has achieved and we will be returning for more work in the future.Posted on Google Becky FTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excellent work replacing a conservatory roof, soffits and gutters. They carried out in a timely manner, tidied up as they went and everyone who came into the house was friendly. They explained what they were doing, can’t fault any of the work carried out. Would recommendPosted on Google Martin HTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Tom and his team have just completed a fantastic job installing a new roof on my conservatory, installing down lighters and creating a fantastic new space. On top of that they have removed a stud wall creating a fantastic new open space in my bedroom. They have an extra mile to install new guttering, facias and soffits on the property which gives a new feel and looks fantastic. They have worked really hard to give me what I wanted. Would highly recommend Roofs & Drives to anyone looking for a harding working team who do a fantastic job.Posted on Google R_yxnjamesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Shout out to Matty!Posted on Google Stephen mTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Tom and his team did an outstanding job in renewing our conservatory roof. The finished result using Metrotile and insulation is much warmer and quieter. We also had the drive and front of the house re-done, which involved a lot of preparation. Tom and his team again did a great job finishing with a resin bound uv surface. All work was done to a very high standard, and all waste taken away promptly. We would have no hesitation in reccommending Roofs & Drives to anyone considering having work done at a very competitive price. Mr & Mrs Meacher. Common Driveway Problems We Fix
Sunken or rutted block paving — lifted, base rebuilt and re-compacted, relaid with the original blocks. The repair blends in because the blocks have weathered together.
Pooling water and drainage problems — standing water after rain means levels or drainage need correcting; on Teesside clay this is the fault we see most. We re-grade, add or clear drainage channels, and stop water undermining the base.
Cracked or pothole tarmac — cut out, re-based where needed and hot-patched; full resurfacing over a sound base where cracking is widespread.
Weeds, joint sand loss and staining — re-sanding, sealing and cleaning that make a structurally sound drive look years newer.
Loose or spreading edges — failed edge restraints let a drive spread and unravel; we re-set or replace edging courses to lock everything back tight.
We repair driveways across Darlington, Newton Aycliffe, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and the surrounding North East — see all areas we serve.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do driveway repairs cost in Darlington?
Tarmac patch repairs start from £150; sunken block paving relaid £150–£450 per affected area; full clean, re-sand and seal £8–£12/m². Free assessment, fixed written quote, honest advice on whether repair is worth it.
Why has my block paving sunk?
The sub-base beneath has settled or washed out — often along wheel tracks or over a poorly backfilled trench. Relaying blocks without re-compacting the base just schedules the same repair for next year, which is why we always fix the base first.
Can you repair tarmac without it showing?
A hot-filled, properly compacted patch cut back to square edges blends well, especially after a surface dressing — but total invisibility on aged tarmac isn’t honest to promise. We colour-match as close as the surface allows and tell you what to expect.
Is cleaning and sealing worth the money?
On sound block paving, absolutely — it restores colour, kills the weeds in the joints, and the sealer locks fresh kiln-dried sand in place so the surface stays tight for years. On failed paving it’s lipstick; we’ll tell you which yours is.
My driveway floods — can that be fixed without replacing it?
Often, yes. A blocked or broken channel drain (£200–£500 to renew) or a re-graded soakaway solves many flooding drives. If the whole surface was laid without falls, we’ll be straight that drainage retrofits have limits.
Do you repair driveways you didn't build?
Yes — most of our repair work is on other firms’ driveways. We’ll never name-and-shame, but you’ll get an honest read on why it failed so the repair doesn’t repeat the mistake.
How quickly can small repairs be done?
Most patch and relay jobs are a half-day to a day, and we batch them efficiently — it’s why our small-repair prices stay sensible. Clean-and-seal needs a dry 24 hours afterwards.
Are repairs guaranteed?
Yes — repair work carries our written workmanship guarantee. If a patch we cut or an area we relaid fails, we come back and make it right.

Repair or replace? The honest maths
Our rule of thumb: repair when damage is local and the base underneath is sound — one sunken run of blocks, a pothole or two, faded colour, weedy joints. Replace when failure is structural and spread: widespread sinking (the sub-base has gone), tarmac crazed across the whole surface, or drainage so poor the drive floods the garage every winter. A £300 repair on a structurally-failed drive is money burned — but equally, plenty of drives we’re asked to replace need £400 of relaying and a re-seal, not £4,000 of reconstruction. That’s the assessment we give, with photos, either way. If replacement is the honest answer, our block paving, resin and tarmac driveway pages carry full 2026 guide prices — and our comparison guide helps you pick the right surface for how you actually use the drive.
Every installation is covered by our 10-year workmanship guarantee and full public liability insurance — and you don’t pay a penny until you’re completely satisfied with the finished job. We’re a family-run Darlington business (winner of Best Driveway Service Darlington 2025, rated 5.0★ by local homeowners), so our reputation rides on every job we finish.
