The most common call we get about driveways isn’t for a new one — it’s “part of my drive has sunk”. Around Darlington and Teesside that’s usually the clay ground settling under a sub-base that was too shallow in the first place, water getting underneath through failed joints or poor drainage, or years of a car parked in exactly the same spot.
The good news: block paving is genuinely repairable. Because it’s made of individual blocks, we can lift the affected area, rebuild and re-compact the base underneath, and relay the same blocks — colour-matched and blended into the rest of the drive. Done properly, a lift-and-relay repair costs a fraction of a replacement and adds years of life.
Tarmac and resin surfaces can be repaired too — potholes and cracks in tarmac can be cut out and hot-patched, and localised resin damage can be re-bound — though large-scale failure across a whole surface usually points to a base problem, where we’ll give you a straight comparison between repair and replacement costs so you can decide with the numbers in front of you.

What Our Customers Say
EXCELLENT Based on 70 reviews Posted on Google Daniel HTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Tom and his team have left us with a first class upgraded drive. Tom was brilliant, friendly and knowledgeable to deal with from our initial no obligation quote months ago to us getting back in touch later in the year, we didn’t feel rushed whatsoever. He gave us a more than fair price for the job, the outcome of two days hard graft by him, and his team is an outstanding end product we are more than satisfied with. He should be satisfied with the high standards the team has achieved and we will be returning for more work in the future.Posted on Google Becky FTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excellent work replacing a conservatory roof, soffits and gutters. They carried out in a timely manner, tidied up as they went and everyone who came into the house was friendly. They explained what they were doing, can’t fault any of the work carried out. Would recommendPosted on Google Martin HTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Thanks Tom for the work done. You and your team provided a quality job to convert our conservatory roof. You were there on time each day and left it clean after completion. I would recommend you to anyone thinking of having a similar work done. MartinPosted on Google Angela ETrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We have had a new roof fitted on our conservatory. Roofs and Drives did an excellent job, and the finished work looks great. The men were polite and considerate, cleared up well when they had finished and were reliable in terms of arrival and finished times, and length of time to be taken. We feel we were given very good value for money.Posted on Google Mary WTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Came straight out and made storm damage water tight. They did it promptly and at a reasonable prices and I am a very happy customer and would recommend them to any one.Posted on Google Tom HTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Tom and his team have just completed a fantastic job installing a new roof on my conservatory, installing down lighters and creating a fantastic new space. On top of that they have removed a stud wall creating a fantastic new open space in my bedroom. They have an extra mile to install new guttering, facias and soffits on the property which gives a new feel and looks fantastic. They have worked really hard to give me what I wanted. Would highly recommend Roofs & Drives to anyone looking for a harding working team who do a fantastic job.Posted on Google R_yxnjamesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Had some damage to the guttering on my roof and they came out fairly quickly and sorted it, decent price, good quality + top lads that did it. Shout out to Matty!Posted on Google Stephen mTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Tom and his team did an outstanding job in renewing our conservatory roof. The finished result using Metrotile and insulation is much warmer and quieter. We also had the drive and front of the house re-done, which involved a lot of preparation. Tom and his team again did a great job finishing with a resin bound uv surface. All work was done to a very high standard, and all waste taken away promptly. We would have no hesitation in reccommending Roofs & Drives to anyone considering having work done at a very competitive price. Mr & Mrs Meacher. Common Driveway Problems We Fix
Sunken or rutted block paving — lifted, base rebuilt and re-compacted, relaid with the original blocks. The repair blends in because the blocks have weathered together.
Pooling water and drainage problems — standing water after rain means levels or drainage need correcting; on Teesside clay this is the fault we see most. We re-grade, add or clear drainage channels, and stop water undermining the base.
Cracked or pothole tarmac — cut out, re-based where needed and hot-patched; full resurfacing over a sound base where cracking is widespread.
Weeds, joint sand loss and staining — re-sanding, sealing and cleaning that make a structurally sound drive look years newer.
Loose or spreading edges — failed edge restraints let a drive spread and unravel; we re-set or replace edging courses to lock everything back tight.
We repair driveways across Darlington, Newton Aycliffe, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and the surrounding North East — see all areas we serve.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to repair a sunken block paving driveway?
It depends on the area affected and how much of the base needs rebuilding. Small settled patches are often a few hundred pounds; larger areas cost more but still typically come in well under a full replacement. Because we reuse your existing blocks, materials costs stay low — the honest number takes a quick free survey.
Why has my driveway sunk?
Usually one of three things: a sub-base that was too shallow or poorly compacted when the drive was built, water getting underneath through failed joints or bad drainage and washing out fines, or heavy point loads (skips, vans) on a base never designed for them. Clay ground across Darlington and Teesside makes all three worse — which is why our repairs always address the base, not just the surface.
Is it worth repairing an old driveway or should I replace it?
A useful rule of thumb: if the damage is localised and the rest of the drive is sound, repair is nearly always better value. If more than about a third of the surface is failing, or the base has failed across the drive, replacement usually works out cheaper over ten years. We’ll give you both numbers and our honest recommendation — no pressure either way.
Can you match my existing blocks or tarmac?
With lift-and-relay we reuse your original blocks so matching isn’t an issue. Where blocks are broken and need replacing, we source the closest match and blend them into less visible areas. Tarmac patches are visible at first but weather in — we’ll be upfront about what it will look like.
Do you fix driveway drainage problems?
Yes — pooling and runoff problems are the root cause of many failures. We re-grade levels, install or clear ACO channels and soakaways, and make sure water goes where it should: away from the drive and your house.
